The Legals Of Marriage

Oct 8, 2019

The following steps are required within Australia to ensure that your marriage is legal.

If you are planning to marry a “Notice of Intention to Marry” must be completed with your celebrant at least one month before the wedding.  If I am to be your celebrant, I will be happy to help you with the completion of this form.  When completing the form you will be required to prove your identity with two pieces of identification. This can be your passport and driver’s licence or your driver’s licence and birth certificate, whichever is readily available to you.

On the day of your wedding, three marriage documents are signed by both parties getting married along with two witnesses of your choice. The witnesses must be 18 years of age or older. You will leave your ceremony with your Certificate of Marriage.

As your celebrant it is then my responsibility to file your documentation with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state in which the marriage took place.  You will receive your Government issued Marriage Certificate in the mail up to six weeks after your wedding.

I would be more than happy to assist in any questions you will need answered during this process.
